Pallet Exchange Fee

What is a Pallet Exchange Fee?

A Pallet Exchange Fee is a charge assessed when pallets are swapped between a shipper and receiver at the time of delivery or pickup. It typically applies in less-than-truckload (LTL) and intermodal shipments, where carriers expect to receive an equal number of usable pallets in return for those delivered.

If the receiving party cannot or does not return pallets, the shipper or receiver may be charged a pallet exchange or replacement fee.

When Is a Pallet Exchange Fee Charged?

  • When no pallets are returned in exchange for delivered ones
  • When returned pallets are damaged or non-standard
  • In retail or grocery deliveries that require pallet tracking and accountability
  • When CHEP or pooled pallets are involved and must be documented properly

Typical Pallet Exchange Fee Range

  • $10–$25 per pallet, depending on pallet type, location, and carrier policies

Example in Practice

A supplier delivers goods to a distribution center on 20 wood pallets. If the facility doesn’t return 20 usable pallets or fails to process the exchange properly, a $15 per pallet exchange fee may be applied—totaling $300 in added costs.
