On September 11th, President Trump announced that the U.S. will postpone the planned tariff rate increase from 25% to 30% on Section 301 List 1, 2 and 3 Chinese products, originally scheduled to take effect October 1st, until October 15th.

Trump’s ‘goodwill gesture’, in honor of the People’s Republic of China’s 70th anniversary on October 1st, is a response to an announcement from China earlier in the day yesterday that granted a one-year exemption from Chinese tariffs for 16 U.S. products.

Though US-China trade relations continue to teeter, the conciliatory moves made by both countries may indicate a brief thawing in tension ahead of the next round of trade talks scheduled to resume in Washington in a few weeks.

Shapiro will continue to monitor the situation and provide status updates on our Section 301 Tariff News page as they become available.
