What is a Double Blind Shipment?
A double blind shipment is a shipping arrangement where both the shipper and the consignee are unaware of each other’s identity. Only a third party—usually a freight forwarder, 3PL, or reseller—knows the full details and coordinates the entire transaction.
This method is used to protect business relationships, maintain confidentiality, and prevent direct contact between the buyer and seller.
Why Use Double Blind Shipping?
- Prevent disintermediation (e.g., buyer bypassing the middleman)
- Protect supplier or customer lists
- Enable white-label or dropshipping models
- Maintain control over pricing and brand relationships
How It Works
The third party arranges:
- Shipping documents with altered or neutral information
- Labels or packing slips that exclude real shipper/consignee details
- A carrier to handle the shipment without disclosing full parties involved
Example in Practice
A U.S.-based distributor buys beauty products from a manufacturer in Korea and sells them to a retailer in Canada. To protect both ends of the supply chain, the distributor uses a double blind shipment, ensuring the manufacturer doesn’t know the retailer—and vice versa.
