CBP Releases Guidance for Marking Goods Produced in Hong KongCBP Releases Guidance for Marking Goods Produced in Hong Kong
- August 10, 2020
As you are already aware, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order officially revoking preferential economic treatment for Hong Kong in response to mainland China’s enforcement of a controversial security law effective July 14.
Now, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has released an official notice in the Federal Register advising importers that products made in Hong Kong will need to be marked as made in China beginning September 25, 2020.

Although a senior administration official advised last month that “the July 14, 2020 Executive Order on Hong Kong Normalization does not provide for new US tariffs on goods from Hong Kong”, the notice fails to provide additional guidance as to how the changes will affect tariffs on Hong Kong goods.
Shapiro is actively monitoring the situation and will provide status updates as they become available.
