Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) is experiencing major disruptions at its Charleston, SC gateways. Many tracks have washed out, and many bridges have been deemed unsafe for passage due to the record rainfall and heavy flooding in the area.

Norfolk Southern personnel are actively surveying the area and reporting that not all gates are operational.  At noon on October 5th, all inbound rail gates were closed to traffic destined for Charleston, SC. While there is no outbound service at this time, NS is now accepting in-gate cargo for outbound loading. Per the Norfolk Southern website today, several key lines are now back in service, while others remain impacted:

  • Columbia-to-Augusta Line (R Line-South) is back in service.
  • Columbia-to-Charlotte Line (R Line-North) is back in service.
  • Columbia-to-Charleston Line (SC Line) is expected to be in service by 12:01 AM October 9th.
  • Columbia-to-Spartanburg Line (W line) is projected to be out of service for two to three weeks due to bridge repairs.  Traffic is being rerouted to accommodate local service to customers. Minor delays should be expected.
