Brazil Dockworkers Plan to Strike June 10Brazil Dockworkers Plan to Strike June 10
- June 1, 2014
According to Journal of Commerce reports, an indefinite nationwide dockworker strike is set to begin on June 10 unless a resolution is worked out with the Brazilian government. The strike, organized by local union stevedores, is being used to bring awareness to general labor issues within the country. Some reporters are speculating that the stevedores are attempting to take advantage of worldwide attention because the FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 12, however, reports do not indicate a correlation between the strike and ongoing public demonstrations against the World Cup. Dockworkers did previously strike for one day in July of 2013 to protest the sale of public terminals to private entities. The strike is expected to affect all ports across Brazil and cause significant delays.
Information is currently limited but Shapiro is closely monitoring these negotiations and will keep you posted on further updates.
